Dealing with Shame

I next discussed how important it is for long term sobriety to deal with shame

  • Guilt = I did something bad
  • Shame = I am a bad person
  • The 3 C’s of Al Anon
    • I didn’t Cause it
    • I can’t Control it
    • I’m not going to Cure it
  • Steps I found helpful for admitting I was an alcoholic getting rid of the shame
    • Say it to yourself
    • Say it out loud
    • Say it to a loved one
    • Say it at an AA meeting
    • Say it to someone you don’t know
    • Say it to someone you do know, but you haven’t told yet
  • I discussed two recent instances were I didn’t let shame get in the way

Good Morning, Monster by Catherine Gildner

This book had an amazing story of a girl named Laura who had a horrifying childhood, but got over her shame and took back her life. As an alcoholic, that is what we need to strive to do everyday and I hope others can relate to her story and strive to not let this disease define them too.
