Day 9 – Bueller… Bueller… Bueller

Life moves pretty fast

How time flies. If there is one thing I have learned 9 days in it is that life moves pretty fast! So fast in fact, that if you don’t make a concerted effort to slow down and enjoy it, you could miss it. In early recovery I found it important to set a routine.

Maybe it’s a Daily Routine

  • Wake up and read from Touchstone’s
  • Call someone from a meeting
  • Check in with my sponsor
  • Attend IOP

Maybe it’s a weekly routine

  • Monday: Meeting at…
  • Tuesday: Call…
  • Wednesday: IOP
  • Thursday: Meeting at…

The problem I have found with routines, is that eventually they become, well, routine. So much so, that if I don’t take time to slow down and look around a bit, the day, or week, can end and I’m not even sure how I got here. I liken it to a morning or evening commute. How often do you end up at work and can’t remember the drive in?

Ferris Bueller

By breaking up my routine I’m able to slow down and enjoy each day a little more. At my Friday meeting last week I was talking with a friend at the meeting after the meeting and he mentioned he worked at Eggy’s near Downtown Mpls. Today I went there for breakfast. I don’t usually go out for breakfast, but today I decided to and it was the highlight of my day and changed my outlook for the week. Just one simple change to my routine, but it made all the difference.

Health Check

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve started doing smoothies for breakfast and lunch and then have a sensible dinner. Well, if you follow me on Twitter and saw my Eggy’s Benedict that didn’t pan out today. Instead, I changed my routine. Eggy’s Benedict for breakfast and a smoothie for lunch and dinner. I also did an extra lap around the block walking the dog. I didn’t hit the scale today, but today was a 9 and I soaked it all in.
